Spinsterhood

There are various critical issues in our society which people usually differ on. This maybe because we are eastern society which means that we have certain way of thinking and behaving compared to western societies. However, people actually in our society put limited boxes in thinking or behaving for themselves fearing not to be different from the rest of the society without deep or mature thinking on the effects of that in the society. Spinsterhood is one of the highest critical issues in our society.

What does spinsterhood mean from the society’s point of view? Unfortunately, people consider any girl over thirty is spinster. Does this mean that any girl over thirty, forty or even fifty cannot marry? How come is that? Is there already a certain age for marriage? How people put a certain age for marriage if religions themselves do not put that? Marriage actually is a God’s favor, no one can interfere in this; however, what people actually do on the ground is putting a real pressure on girls: the burden of marriage, in turn this lead them to think finally like them. She wants to marry before the marriage train passes without a mature thinking in the real responsibilities of marriage and children, without thinking is this person is suitable or not. The rashness in taking the marriage step and the quick desire in feeling glad with the wedding, dress, buying furniture, how to decorate the home…etc make them totally blind on what comes next. This is all just to satisfy the people’s desire or fearing to be different.

Actually, what really people do not know is that this issue is totally irrelevant to our eastern culture. I mean anyone think differently about this issue; marry whenever they want without caring about the society, does not mean that he/she opposes our culture or tradition, but actually they are easing the life and thinking out of the limited boxes which the society impose. What proves my opinion is that there are girls who marry after thirty and forty and succeeded in their marriage life, on the contrary, some of the girls married in hurry and at young age cannot shoulder the marriage responsibilities. This maybe one of the reasons of the high divorce rate among youth.

In short, I am not saying that marriage at young age is better than at mature age or vice versa, but what I am really calling for is not to give the society the chance to control our lives, especially that the society do not share any responsibility from what they throw. Marriage is totally a person’s choice, no one has the right to interfere in this.
